Newser is a new online new service that scans many news sources using both human and automated aggregation. Utiling a visual layout, the news service gives you a quick look at the most interesting news items at any time. What I liked about this service is a “Hard” and “Soft” slider. Slide the slider either way and the news changes for hard hitting to the more feel good variety.

Sliding the slider over to ’soft’ got me to an article on horses from the USA being shipped over to Mexico to face a gruesome death with a knife - a truly evil practice.

Ever wondered where you can dispose off batteries, paint, medicines, computers and other stuff that you normally place on the curb or along with general refuse? Well Earth911.org will point you in the right direction for almost anything you can think of in terms of recycling or of the environment. It is also a great resource to understand what exactly thinking Green is all about and how you can reduce your impact on the environment.

I came to this site looking for a place to recycle CFL bulbs that Walmart, Lowes, Bed Bath & Beyond etc are selling. But only Ikea has a program in place to recycle these mercury (toxic stuff) containing bulbs. I suppose for most retailers unless volumes are built, it would be too expensive to recycle these bulbs.

Sometime last year, Nikon gave away Nikon D40 Digital SLR cameras to 200 people of Georgetown, South Carolina. These people were amateurs who were allowed to take pictures of almost anything around the town. The result of this marketing experiment is the Nikon Picturetown website. This experiment proves that the D40 is quite a capable camera that can produce quality photos even with new users. I am sure not every picture that came out of these cameras made it to this website but if one is inclined to put in the time into any capable camera such as the D40 (an subsequent models), one can get many great results. The website is a real pleasure to explore even if you are not into photography plus a great example of using innovative marketing techniques to deliver more out of the advertising budget.
