This is a site that is a spoof on speed dating. Essentially, the site is a slick organization of videos clips that have been stitched together using Flash to deliver a message – interactively. In this case, the message is about the effects of diabetes. The whole concept is so innvovative that viral marketing alone would have made this campaign a success.

This innovative site is worth looking at both from marketing as well as technology perspectives.

If you visit any alcohol/liquor product websites, you are sure to see an age verification form. What good does this practice do? I am sure any 14 year old who comes to these website is not exactly stopped by these forms. So why have them there? I think its to do with showing that a company is responsible and doing whatever little that needs to be done. In this case it costs you 1-4 clicks extra depending on the website. But the question here is, why does the whole internet behave the same way even when you know that a practice makes no sense?

Here are a few websites I’d checked out to see who was verifying what. I must add that liquor companies make brilliant websites.

After spending 5 minutes at Trulia.com looking at property listings, it became evident to me that this was a service whose forte was presentation and simplicity of use. The concept is simple, allow multiple vendors to submit their property listings, aggregate and classify the data and present it using an intuitive visual interface. Although the number of listings on Trulia is far lower than many internet data exchange services, the interactive map feature allows to you quickly get a feel of a market and also to see neighborhoods on a map. For example if you were looking for a house close to a particular highway or a golf course, this service makes it easy to identify potential places to go looking for a house. Trulia.com is a welcome change from every other depression inducing service that is out there. The service is also testament to the fact that if you just take an existing concept that works, put in an improvement or two along with a certain ‘twist’ you’ve got yourself a brand new service.

The objective of any task is to get a desired result. And as long as the desired result is achieved, the activity can be termed a success. In business, you often come across people who are too detail oriented, thus wasting time or who diverge so much from the goal, that the objective is not realized.

Both behaviors tend to waste an organization’s funds. A useful approach to solving such issues to understand that sometimes ‘good enough’ is adequate and define ‘good enough’ before any task.

A real world example of a ‘good enough’ product is the Berkshire Hathaway website. Some say its, plain – too plain. Maybe its not standards compliant. But the bottom line, is that the website does what is supposed to do – which is inform its shareholders and anyone interested in the company and its activities. No wonder Warren Buffet can make and give away so much money.

Below are screen shots of two corporate websites. One company is doing really well and the other (Foxtons) with an award winning website recently filed for Chapter 11.
